Born in 1918 in Toronto, Canada, and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, his fascination with radio technology began at the age of nine during a steamboat trip on Lake Erie. By 1938, Gross had developed and patented his own version of the walkie-talkie, a lightweight, handheld two-way radio. His innovations didn’t stop there—he also contributed to the development of the telephone pager, Citizens’ Band (CB) radio, and even laid the groundwork for cordless telephony.

During World War II, Gross worked on top-secret communication systems for the U.S. military, including the Joan-Eleanor system, which allowed secure air-to-ground communication behind enemy lines.
